International Shipping Packing Guide

A practical guide to packing furniture, appliances, televisions, glass and cartons for international shipping, including materials and a handover checklist.

A practical guide to shipment preparation

International shipping packing guide by Alrahwan Golden

Learn how to pack furniture, appliances, screens, glass, clothing, cartons and ornaments for international shipping to reduce the risk of breakage, damage and delays.

Why is packing so important before shipping?

Packing means more than putting an item in a carton. Protection starts with understanding the contents, fragility, weight, dimensions and transport method. A properly packed shipment is easier to load and sort, less exposed to rubbing and better protected during air, sea or road transport.

Alrahwan Golden recommends preparing well before collection. Shipping problems can arise from weak packing, unsuitable cartons, unnumbered boxes, heavy items placed on fragile goods, or unsecured appliances and delicate pieces, as well as from handling in transit.

Reduce breakage and damage

Suitable packing protects edges, surfaces and items vulnerable to scratches or breakage during movement.

Easier sorting

Numbering cartons and labelling their contents makes checking and delivery easier on arrival.

Better use of space

Careful packing reduces gaps inside cartons and helps organise the load.

Avoid preventable delays

Clear inventories and organised cartons make shipment checks easier and reduce confusion.

Essential packing materials

The right material depends on the contents. No single material suits everything: furniture needs different protection from screens, and glass needs more cushioning than clothing.

Packing material Suitable uses Points to check
Strong corrugated cartons Clothing, books, tools and household items Use new or sound cartons that are strong and dry.
Bubble wrap Glass, screens, ornaments and small appliances Use as cushioning around the item; it is not always sufficient as the only protection.
Stretch wrap Securing furniture, cartons and already-protected items Do not rely on it alone to protect fragile goods.
Foam and corner protectors Furniture, tables, mirrors and screens Particularly important for edges and impact-prone points.
Wide packing tape Sealing cartons and securing protective layers Seal the bottom and top securely to prevent the carton opening.

How to pack furniture for international shipping

Furniture needs careful handling because it combines large dimensions with surfaces that can scratch, edges exposed to impacts and parts that may move in transit. Prepare each piece individually.

Dismantle removable parts

Remove legs, shelves, glass and handles where practical. Put screws in a small, clearly labelled bag.

Protect corners

Use foam or strong cardboard corner protection on tables, cupboards and beds.

Cover surfaces

Add a protective layer before stretch wrapping so the film does not touch wood or leather directly.

Label each piece

Mark the room or item number to make delivery and reassembly easier at the destination.

Packing electrical appliances

Appliances need protection against impacts, movement and moisture. Empty and clean them before packing, particularly refrigerators, washing machines and ovens.

Appliance Preparation and packing Important point
Refrigerator Empty and dry it, secure the door and protect the corners. Do not ship it with food or liquids inside.
Washing machine Drain the water, secure the hose and protect the outer cabinet. Secure the drum for transport where applicable, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Microwave Remove the glass turntable and wrap it separately. Internal glass needs separate protection.
Small air-conditioning units Clean, dry and pack with suitable protective layers. Protect pipes and projecting parts.

Packing screens and televisions

Screens are particularly fragile. An ordinary carton alone is not enough: protect the screen from direct pressure, secure the frame and prevent contact against the front surface.

An important rule

Do not lay a screen flat beneath heavy items. Keep it upright in a suitable carton with protection at the front and back.

  1. Disconnect cables, remotes and stands and place them in a separate bag.
  2. Place a soft protective layer over the screen surface without applying pressure.
  3. Use foam or strong cardboard protection in front of and behind the screen.
  4. Label the carton: SCREEN – FRAGILE – DO NOT STACK.

Packing glass, mirrors and ornaments

Use several protective layers and fill gaps inside the carton. Empty space allows items to move and may lead to breakage even in a strong box.

First layer

Paper or a soft layer to prevent direct scratches on the surface.

Second layer

Bubble wrap or foam cushioning around the entire item.

Third layer

A strong carton or suitable box with internal voids filled.

Packing clothing, books and documents

Although less fragile than glass or appliances, clothing and books need careful organisation to protect them from moisture, excessive pressure and mixed contents.

  • Put clothing in inner bags before boxing to protect it from dust and moisture.
  • Avoid making a book carton so heavy that it tears when lifted.
  • Keep important documents together in a secure folder or envelope rather than loose in a carton.
  • Label each carton with its contents and intended room.
  • Avoid packing liquids or perfume together with clothing or papers.

Common packing mistakes to avoid

Overloading cartons

An excessively heavy carton may tear or be difficult to lift safely.

Leaving empty space

Gaps allow items to move and strike one another during transport.

Forgetting to number cartons

Unnumbered cartons make checking and delivery more difficult.

Relying only on stretch wrap

Stretch wrap holds items together but does not provide sufficient impact protection on its own.

Packing FAQs

Should every piece of furniture be wrapped separately?

Yes. Each piece should be protected according to its material and shape, particularly wood, glass, painted surfaces and sharp corners.

Is an ordinary carton suitable for international shipping?

It may suit light items, but international shipping generally needs strong, securely sealed cartons, especially for long journeys or repeated handling.

How should I pack a television?

Use the original carton if available, with protection at the front and back. Secure the television upright and label it clearly as fragile.

Can I pack clothing and appliances in the same carton?

It is better to separate different item types. Pack clothing on its own and put appliances in suitable cartons with appropriate protection.

Do you offer packing alongside shipping?

You can request help preparing and packing a shipment, subject to the service, collection city and shipment details.

What matters most before handing over the shipment?

Check that cartons are securely closed and numbered, contents are labelled, fragile pieces are protected and an inventory is prepared where possible.
