The Al Ahsa to Oman route: distance, crossing and transit time

The distance from Hofuf to Muscat is about 1,170 km, roughly 13 hours of driving. The truck heads south-west from Al Ahsa towards Haradh, then along the Saudi – Omani road for about 319 km to the Shaybah field, then 246 km across the dunes to the Rub Al Khali crossing, facing the Omani Ramlat Khaylah post, then about 155 km to Ibri and 280 km to Muscat.

Al Ahsa is the Eastern Province city closest to the start of this road, so its shipments do not pass through Riyadh or the UAE. Shared loads from Hofuf join Eastern Province trucks heading to Oman and share the cost of the long trip.

Mode Approx. time Best for Starts from
Shared road load 4 – 5 days A room, single items, cartons SAR 45
Dedicated truck 3 – 4 days Full household moves, commercial cargo Depends on truck
Enclosed car carrier 3 – 5 days Cars Per vehicle
Air 1 – 2 days Documents and urgent parcels By weight
Sea via Dammam 6 – 9 days Commercial containers Per container

Times start on the collection day and include routine border procedures.

What happens at Rub Al Khali and Ramlat Khaylah?

Stop Procedure
Rub Al Khali (Saudi Arabia) The Fasah export declaration is matched against the load and exit is stamped
Ramlat Khaylah (Oman) Omani customs review the packing list, value and receiver details
Inspection X-ray of the truck or random opening of a few cartons
Release The truck continues to Ibri, then Muscat and the other governorates

The Rub Al Khali crossing is far from any city, so we time the arrival carefully for working hours and file the Fasah export declaration before leaving Hofuf. At Ramlat Khaylah Omani customs match the list against the load, and a numbered list makes any random check quick.

The trip day by day

Stage Time
Collection, dismantling, packing and loading 1 – 2 days
Al Ahsa to the Rub Al Khali crossing about one day
Rub Al Khali and Ramlat Khaylah hours to one day
Ramlat Khaylah to Muscat about 5 hours
Delivery and reassembly 1 day
To shorten transit: have the receiver’s Omani ID card or passport and Omani phone number ready before loading; incomplete receiver details are the most common reason shipments are held at Ramlat Khaylah.

Shipping prices from Al Ahsa to Oman

We price furniture by cubic metre because a truck fills by volume before weight. Prices include dismantling, packing, loading, transport, delivery and reassembly at destination. The price is confirmed after you send photos of the rooms or after a survey, and does not change after loading as long as the items match the list.

Household move prices by size

Shipment Volume Starts from
Single bedroom 6 – 9 m³ SAR 1,610
Master bedroom 10 – 14 m³ SAR 2,440
Studio or one-bedroom 8 – 12 m³ SAR 2,120
Two-bedroom apartment 16 – 24 m³ SAR 4,460
Three-bedroom apartment 25 – 38 m³ SAR 7,270
Medium villa 40 – 60 m³ SAR 11,730
Large villa 65 – 95 m³ SAR 18,680

Insurance and destination government fees are separate items.

Single item prices

Item Starts from
Four-door wardrobe SAR 735
Master bed with mattress SAR 645
Arabic majlis, 9 pieces SAR 1,470
European sofa, 7 seats SAR 1,150
Dining table with 6 chairs SAR 735
Fridge or washing machine SAR 370
Split AC, complete SAR 275
65-inch TV SAR 230
Standard carton SAR 45

Single items carry a minimum invoice, so for more than five large pieces ask for the full-room price. On a trip of more than 1,100 km, reducing volume is the most effective way to save.

Seven factors that set the bill

Factor Effect In your control?
Volume in cubic metres The biggest effect Yes, by sorting before shipping
Kitchens and majlis sets Add volume and dismantling time Partly
Truck type Shared or dedicated Yes
City in Oman Salalah is about 1,000 km from Muscat No
Floor and lift Sets the crew size Partly, by booking the lift
Wooden crates Extra cost for fragile pieces Yes
Season Holidays are busier Yes, by booking early

Furniture moving from Al Ahsa to Oman

Al Ahsa homes often have large majlis sets, heavy carpets and full kitchens, so packing gets particular attention. The carpenter dismantles and numbers kitchens, wardrobes and beds, majlis cushions go into numbered bags, carpets are rolled on cores, and the supervisor writes the packing list in front of you before the truck is closed.

Furniture being packed in Al Ahsa for Oman
Layered packing suited to each material before loading.

Dismantling by carpenters

Large wardrobes, bedrooms and kitchens are dismantled by carpenters who know the assembly order, not just by movers. Every panel is numbered, and screws and hinges go into numbered bags tied to the piece itself, so the wardrobe goes back together in your new home exactly as it was, with no missing parts or new holes.

Packing guide by material

Wood and lacquer

Moving blanket, then bubble wrap, then cardboard edges.

Majlis and carpets

Numbered bags for cushions; carpets rolled on a core.

Marble and glass

Wooden crates lined with foam.

Appliances

Fridge switched off 6 hours earlier; washer drum locked.

TVs

Double cartons or a dedicated box.

Clothes

Wardrobe cartons that keep clothes hanging.

When is a wooden crate needed?

Standard packing is enough for most furniture, but marble tops, large mirrors, chandeliers, antiques and valuable equipment need a crate built to size, because pressure in the truck or vibration on the road can break them even when well wrapped. We identify these pieces during the survey and price their crates in advance.

Air conditioners and kitchens

A split AC is removed after the gas is pumped down into the outdoor unit, and the pipes are sealed against moisture; it is reinstalled at destination and recharged if needed. Kitchens are photographed before dismantling, cabinets are numbered right to left, and the new kitchen space is measured first, because custom kitchens may not fit without adjustment.

Areas we collect from in Al Ahsa

Hofuf and Mubarraz with all their districts, Al Uyun, Al Jafr, Al Omran, Al Qarah, Al Hulaylah and the eastern and northern villages. Shared loads are consolidated in Hofuf before departure.

Dedicated truck or shared load?

Comparison Dedicated truck Shared load
Transit 3 – 4 days 4 – 5 days
Cost Fixed per truck By your volume
Best for A full house or villa A room, items or cartons

Homes above roughly 25 cubic metres are usually cheaper with a dedicated truck; a room, a few items or cartons are cheaper in a shared load that splits the road cost.

Car shipping from Al Ahsa to Oman

Cars are moved from Al Ahsa to Oman on enclosed carriers with full covers and wheel straps, arriving in 3 – 5 days. We document the car’s condition with photos and the odometer reading at collection, and the receiver signs the condition report on delivery.

Covered car on an enclosed carrier in Al Ahsa for Oman
An enclosed carrier protects the car all the way to Muscat.
  • Price: by car type, size and delivery city; we send it once we know the model
  • Documents: registration (istimara), owner’s ID, authorisation if shipped by someone else, and the export procedure
  • Registration: according to Royal Oman Police and Omani customs requirements

See our car shipping guide from Saudi Arabia to Oman for inspection and registration after arrival.

Cartons, gifts and dates

Clothes cartons, gifts and Khalas and Ruzaiz dates from Al Ahsa travel in the shared load; a standard carton starts from SAR 45. Write the receiver’s name and Omani number on every carton, keep liquids apart from clothes, and do not overfill cartons so they do not burst when stacked. Commercial quantities of dates need an invoice and a certificate of origin.

Electrical appliances

Oman mains voltage is 240 V and sockets are the British type, so appliances from Saudi Arabia usually work with a simple plug adapter. TVs travel in double cartons and removable batteries are taken out.

Commercial shipping from Al Ahsa to Oman

We serve Al Ahsa traders, date factories and the Al Ahsa industrial city with full or part loads to Rusayl, Sohar Industrial and Nizwa. GCC-origin goods are treated under the GCC customs union rules with a certificate of origin; other goods are subject to the applicable customs duties, and Oman applies 5% VAT on taxable goods. Documents: commercial invoice, commercial registration, certificate of origin, packing list and a Fasah export declaration.

We review the item list before loading, because a commercial truck held at Ramlat Khaylah over one item that needs prior approval is delayed in full and may incur waiting charges.

Air freight from Al Ahsa to Oman

Documents and urgent parcels fly from Al Ahsa airport or King Fahd airport in Dammam to Muscat International Airport in one to two days. For containers, goods go by road to Dammam port and then by sea to Sohar or Sultan Qaboos port in 6 – 9 days.

Comparison Road Air Sea
Time 3 – 5 days 1 – 2 days 6 – 9 days
Cost Cheapest for household goods Highest For containers
Best for Furniture and cars Documents and urgent items Traders

Air freight is charged by actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher, so it suits small, relatively heavy parcels such as documents, permitted personal medicines and small devices, not furniture.

Documents required for shipping from Al Ahsa to Oman

Documents and packing list for a Al Ahsa to Oman shipment
A detailed packing list shortens procedures at Ramlat Khaylah.
  1. Sender: national ID or iqama
  2. Receiver: Omani ID card or passport and a Omani phone number
  3. Packing list: one clear line per carton and item
  4. Value declaration: realistic, not understated
  5. Export declaration: via the Fasah platform
  6. Traders: invoice, commercial registration and certificate of origin

A vague description such as “household items” invites a full inspection, while a detailed list with carton numbers lets any random check finish in minutes. More in our Rub Al Khali crossing guide.

What cannot be shipped to Oman

Prohibited

fuel, gas and paints, gas cylinders even when empty, pesticides and chemicals, perishables, weapons and replicas, damaged batteries.

Restricted

commercial quantities of medicines, unapproved wireless devices, plants and animals, non-compliant printed material.

Carry with you

cash, gold, jewellery and original documents.

We go through the list with you before loading; details in our Oman customs and documents guide.

Steps to ship from Al Ahsa to Oman

  1. Send photos: on WhatsApp 0561247112
  2. Get the price: by volume and delivery city
  3. Pick a date: for collection
  4. Dismantling and packing: at your home
  5. Departure: south towards Haradh and Shaybah
  6. Crossing: Rub Al Khali then Ramlat Khaylah
  7. Delivery: and reassembly in Oman

What happens when your shipment reaches Oman?

After release at Ramlat Khaylah, Ibri is the first city on the road, then Nizwa and Muscat, or Sohar and Buraimi. The supervisor calls the receiver to confirm the time and address; residential compounds in Muscat such as Al Mouj and Qurum usually require prior move approval, so arrange it before arrival. The furniture is then unloaded, the carpenter reassembles wardrobes, beds and the kitchen, ACs are installed, every piece is checked in front of you and the delivery report is signed.

Temporary storage

If your home in Oman is not ready yet, we store your belongings in a closed warehouse in Al Ahsa on contracts starting from one month, then ship them on the date you choose.

What you may pay in Oman besides the shipping price

  • VAT: 5% on taxable goods
  • Customs duties: on non-GCC-origin goods and commercial quantities
  • Waiting charges: if documents are delayed at Ramlat Khaylah
  • Insurance: optional, as a percentage of value

Used personal furniture is usually treated as personal effects, and before booking we explain anything that may be due on your shipment so nothing comes as a surprise on arrival.

The Rub Al Khali road: heat and dust

The Saudi – Omani road crosses the Rub Al Khali desert for a long stretch between Shaybah and the border, so we ship from Al Ahsa on fully enclosed trucks, seal furniture packing against dust and give electronics extra layers. We do not recommend shipping candles or anything that melts or reacts to high heat with household goods.

The direct Rub Al Khali route removes the need to transit through the UAE, saving two border posts and a full transit clearance, which makes road shipping to Oman simpler and more predictable in time and cost than it used to be.

Shipping to Salalah and Dhofar

Salalah is the furthest Omani city from the Rub Al Khali route, about 1,000 km south of Muscat. Shipments reach it a day or two after Muscat on a dedicated distribution truck or the southern run, and the distance difference is made clear in the price before loading.

How the cost is calculated

Start with the room volumes from the price table, add extra items and cartons, then any wooden crates. If the total exceeds the price of a dedicated truck, ask for one instead of the shared load.

Example: a two-bedroom apartment in Hofuf of about 20 m³ to Muscat: from SAR 4,460. A master bedroom, a fridge and 10 cartons: 2,440 + 370 + 450 = about SAR 3,260.

The cheapest way to ship from Al Ahsa to Oman

  • Shared load: leaves Al Ahsa straight for the Rub Al Khali road
  • Reduce volume: leave out old mattresses and worn particle-board furniture
  • One shipment: instead of scattered batches
  • Book early: before holidays and peak seasons
  • Pack cartons yourself: for clothes and books

On a trip of more than 1,100 km, sorting before shipping has a bigger effect on the bill, so we advise shipping majlis sets, carpets, good wooden bedrooms and modern appliances, and replacing old mattresses and particle-board furniture in Oman.

  2. Empty the fridge: and switch it off 6 hours earlier
  3. Photograph the kitchen and appliances: before dismantling
  4. Prepare receiver details: Omani ID card and phone number
  5. Book the building permit: in Oman

Tips for your new home in Oman

  • First-days carton: with essentials and tools
  • Measurements: measure the kitchen and wardrobe spaces in the new home

Car shipping: final export or temporary entry?

Before shipping your car from Al Ahsa to Oman, decide which procedure applies, because the documents differ. Final export is for people relocating who want to register the car at destination; it needs a traffic export certificate and export plates, then inspection and registration there. Temporary entry is for a car needed for a set period and then returned, using a customs transit carnet (triptyque) for a limited time.

Comparison Final export Temporary entry
Suits Relocation A visit or temporary work
Documents Registration, export certificate, export plates, owner ID Registration, driving licence, customs transit carnet
At destination Inspection, registration and local plates Use for a set period, then return
Fees According to destination rules Deposit or guarantee per the carnet
  • Financed car: needs a no-objection letter from the finance provider before export
  • Electric car: shipped with the battery between 30% and 50% and non-essential systems off
  • Inside the car: no personal items or original documents are left inside
  • Shipping on behalf of the owner: an electronic authorisation from the owner is required

E-commerce parcels and samples

For online stores and small businesses in Al Ahsa we ship parcels and samples to their customers in Oman in the shared road load, or by air for urgent orders. We collect from your warehouse, label every parcel with the receiver details and send you proof of delivery. Repeated quantities are treated as commercial goods with an invoice and certificate of origin.

How to choose the right shipping company

Price alone is not enough to judge a shipping company: a shipment held at the border or delivered broken costs more than any price difference. Before booking, check the following:

  1. Commercial registration and licence: for international shipping and transport
  2. Border experience: and filing the Fasah export declaration before departure
  3. A clear price: stating what is included: dismantling, packing, reassembly and fees
  4. A carpenter for dismantling and reassembly: not just movers
  5. Optional insurance: as a percentage of the declared value
  6. Tracking and updates: load photos and notices at the border and on arrival

In Oman, import procedures are completed through the Bayan system, so we prepare the packing list, value and receiver details to match what the system requires before the truck arrives.

Return shipping from Oman to Saudi Arabia

If you are moving back from Oman to Al Ahsa or any city in the Kingdom, we run the same trip in reverse: a photo survey, dismantling, packing and loading at your address there, then the crossing, delivery and reassembly at your home. Used personal furniture returning with its owner is usually treated as personal effects, provided the packing list is clear and matches the load.

Common mistakes that cost customers

  • Incomplete receiver details: hold the shipment at Ramlat Khaylah
  • Vague carton descriptions: invite a full inspection
  • Understated value: can stop the shipment
  • Prohibited items: such as gas and paints
  • Building permit not ready: postpones delivery
  • Skipping insurance: on valuable furniture

Shipment insurance

Optional insurance, priced as a percentage of the declared value, covers breakage, damage and loss in transit. We recommend it for valuable furniture and appliances, together with photos of your belongings before packing and noting any remark on the delivery report before signing.
